Boonville bears the family name of Ratliff Boon. Born in 1781, he was one of Warrick County’s most illustrious citizens and public officials and was a cousin of Kentucky’s famed Daniel Boone. Today, the city still has a small-town atmosphere with two locally-owned grocery stores.

President Abraham Lincoln studied law in Boonville. When he and his family moved from Kentucky to present-day Spencer County in 1816, their homestead was then considered within Boonville's boundaries. The future president frequently walked to Boonville to borrow books and watch local attorney John Brackenridge argue cases, thus earning Boonville the distinction of being "where Lincoln learned the law."

City Lake Park displays period lighting with a concrete walking path around the lake as well as shelter houses and gazebos for family gatherings. Scales Lake Park on the northeast side of Boonville offers camping, swimming in the pool or at the beach, hiking, biking, and picnicking. Richard’s Pool is a great public pool to have some fun in the sun, and it’s conveniently located on Main Street.

There’s more fun nearby at the Showplace Cinema in Newburgh. Come to see a movie at this stadium seating, multi-screen movie theater. Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari amusement park in nearby Santa Claus, Indiana is a perennial favorite, offering free soda and sunscreen while you have fun.

Schools

The Warrick County School Corporation has two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school in Boonville. The corporation includes a total of 17 schools. Students in Warrick County are afforded many opportunities which are generated by a sound curriculum, supported by a variety of courses which fulfill and satisfy the needs and interests of students, and enhanced by a diverse program of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities.

The Warrick County School Corporation has earned the highest category placement in the Indiana Department of Education’s annual accountability of schools. The mission of the corporation is to provide a positive and safe instructional environment which promotes the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth of the individual and to encourage each student to become a lifelong learner and contributing member of society.

Students can join numerous sports teams. Boonville High School has a beautiful football stadium, a 400-meter six-lane track, five lighted tennis courts, a baseball and softball field, and an indoor practice facility that is located north and west of the main building. Boonville Middle School offers a main gymnasium that features seating for 710. The school’s football, soccer, and track facilities feature an eight-lane track, 500-seat bleacher area, concession stand, tennis courts, practice football and soccer fields, and a storage area.
