Careers and Industry
Fort Branch is largely a blue-collar town. For a long time, the town's largest employer was the Emge Foods processing and packing plant. When the plant closed in 1999, it had been in operation for nearly 90 years. As the Emge plant was starting to close, Toyota announced that it would be building a manufacturing facility on a patch of farmland located halfway between Fort Branch and nearby Princeton. Today, TMMI Toyota Plant and the Duke Energy Gibson Generating Plant are two of the largest, most up-to-date industrial complexes in the area.
In 2009 Vincennes University built an advanced manufacturing education facility just south of Fort Branch along U.S. 41 to provide such education to an area becoming more diverse in manufacturing methods. While manufacturing is the most common industry in the area, there are also other industries that are commonly found here: construction, retail trade, wholesale trade, accommodation and food service, and transportation and warehousing.
