Franklin Area Homes
Downtown Franklin is noted for the number of well-maintained historic homes and early brick streets. In fact many examples of early 19th-century architecture dot the city. Some interesting commercial examples include the Masonic Temple, built in 1924 and the Johnson County courthouse, built in 1881.
Located on I-65 and US Route 31, Franklin has much to offer. Residents and visitors flock to the downtown area for more than the great food. There are numerous specialty shops that offer a wide variety of merchandise. Jefferson Street is Franklin’s antique/resale/vintage district. Greenwood Park Mall is about 12 minutes north of Franklin in nearby Greenwood and is a great mall with both indoor and outdoor shops, featuring more than 150 shops and eateries.
Culture and Entertainment
Franklin has several miles of walking trails throughout the city which connect several parks, community centers, the public library, and the public pool.
For more outdoor recreation, Blue Heron Park and Wetland offer 55 acres of natural landscape including open fields for Franklin sports, walking trails, and 12 acres of Indiana wildflowers. The Franklin Action Park in Province Park gives a place for skaters and BMX bikers to practice their sport. Franklin comes alive for the city’s Strawberries on the Square in late May and the Beer and the Johnson County Fair in July, and it’s a great time for all at both events.
After a long working day, Franklin becomes rejuvenated after sundown with a vibrant community nightlife. Bars in the city range from the typical hangout sports bars to ritzy lounges. During the day, the Franklin Cultural Arts and Recreation Center offers several venues for sports and exercise as well as meeting rooms and a stage and theater area. View a classic film and enjoy events like the B Movie Celebration at the classic Artcraft Theatre, an art deco style-movie theater built in 1922.
Careers and Industry
Because of its prime location, several major international companies serving a global market have operations in the city. Franklin is also a great place for entrepreneurs. This is the home of the first Ritters Frozen Custard, which became a national brand. The most common industry in this city is manufacturing. Retail trade and construction are also strong industries. Many people work in educational services, transportation, and warehousing. Johnson Memorial Hospital offers job opportunities for those in health care professions. Almost half of workers live and work in the city.
Schools
Franklin Community School Corporation consists of five elementary schools spread throughout the district, Custer Baker Intermediate School, Franklin Community Middle School, and Franklin Community High School. There is also a private preparatory school in Franklin.
Franklin Community Schools believes that “together we empower greatness in all learners through collaboration, dynamic partnerships, and rich experiences that develop a world-class learning environment.” All students here experience a technologically advanced learning environment that helps them compete in an ever-changing society. Each student can choose to participate in other programs that will help them become successful adults. The Advance College Project is a dual-credit program where students take classes taught by their high school teachers for concurrent high school and college credit. The High Ability Program assures that content and instruction is provided at a student’s level. There is an overall commitment to the growth of the high ability student including emotional and social growth. The Special Education curriculum provides services and programs for students with disabilities, striving to educate each students in the least restrictive environment. The schools work hard to assure that individual needs are met.
There are a number of colleges and universities close to Franklin. Franklin College is a private liberal arts college that was built in the early 19th century. It was one of the first colleges in the nation to admit women. Other options for Franklin students include Indiana University-Purdue University at Columbus, Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, Butler University (Indianapolis), University of Indianapolis, Indiana University (Bloomington), Marian University (Indianapolis), and Ivy Tech (Columbus and Indianapolis).
