Fremont was settled in 1834 as Willow Prairie. It became the Village of Brockville when it was platted in 1837. It was later renamed to honor John C. Frémont, a distinguished military officer known as "The Great Pathfinder," partly because there was already a Brockville in Indiana.

This town is the most northeastern town in the state. As an oddity, someone traveling due east from Fremont crosses into Michigan—not into Ohio. This is due to the early 19th-century Ohio-Michigan boundary dispute over Toledo. Fremont Area Homes

Fremont is located four miles east of the interchange between Interstate 69 and the Indiana Toll Road (Interstate 80/90) on State Road 120. Homes range from those that were built in the 19th century when the town was young to those that were built in the 21st century. Two Fremont homes are on the National Register of Historic Places: The Enos Michael House, built in 1850 and the William L. Lords House, built in 1848. It’s a great idea to drive through the town to see all the architectural styles that are available. There is something to suit every lifestyle and budget.

Shopping and Dining

Shoppers who are looking for variety and selection will appreciate what The Outlet Shoppes at Fremont have to offer. With more than 50 fun stores, shopping can be a day-long adventure. There are also specialty shops in town like Dream Toy Store as well as antique shops like Barn Stable Antiques.

Diners who are looking for a variety of dishes can find it in Fremont. Timbuktoos is a hidden gem that is tucked away along State Road 120. The restaurant is known for its steaks, seafood, homemade soups, and local flavors. On Lake George, a former hotel now restaurant, the Lake George Retreat, serves a variety of cuisines in a historic setting.  For those who love Italian food, Rigiono’s is always a great choice.

Culture and Entertainment

Residents can enjoy some fun in the sun at the two town parks, Fremont Town Park and Broad Street Park. Pokagon State Park, four miles west of Fremont, is known for recreational activities such as swimming in Lake James, camping, and tobogganing in the winter months. The park sponsors a deer hunt in the autumn during most years to help control the deer population. Fremont hosts their annual Music Fest each July, which features a parade, live music, games, and vendors. City Park hosts a Farmers' Market on Saturday mornings during the summer months.

Look for the Wild Winds Buffalo Preserve sign on the interstate – it’s just a five-minute drive to the preserve from I-69. You’ll be glad you did when you step into this haven of tranquility and openness. Both the young and the young at heart will be awed by these magnificent animals. Careers and Industry

Fremont is home to several manufacturing facilities including Cold Heading, Swager Communications, New Horizons Baking Company, Health Equipment Mfg Inc., and Dexter Axle. Among others is Cardinal IG, which came to Fremont in March 1998. Cardinal IG  manufactures glass products and has been recognized as a green company, recycling virtually all of the plastic, paper, and cardboard used in the manufacturing processes. The Town of Fremont has joined with other cities and towns within Steuben County to pool resources to form and fund the Steuben County Economic Development Commission, a venture that benefits both businesses and their employees.

Schools

Fremont Community Schools oversees three schools in its district: Fremont High School, Fremont Middle School, and Fremont Elementary School. The school’s motto is “We’re preparing for the future—one student at a time!” This school district once again has been rated as an “A” school from the Indiana Department of Education. Fremont Community Schools received the highest ISTEP+ scores in the area and exceeded the state passing average. Fremont High School was designated as a Four Star School by the Indiana Department of Education. This honor is bestowed upon high schools exceeding academic, attendance, and graduation requirements. Fremont Elementary and Middle Schools believe that every student has the right to learn in a safe, ‘bully-free’ environment. Each individual student's potential is nurtured to enhance the student's positive academic, intellectual, physical, social, moral, emotional, and aesthetic development necessary to meet present and future challenges of life. Success at Fremont High School is built on a solid base of academic fundamentals. The flexibility of four-block scheduling allows students to progress through required courses quickly and move on to the more rigorous advanced, dual credit, and vocational classes. Over 65 percent of Fremont High School graduates leave with college credit already in hand. Students with identified deficiencies in math and English are able to spend more time in year-long classes to gain the skills and confidence needed to become successful graduates.
