In 1870, the only three towns listed in Howard County were Kokomo, Russiaville, and New London. Ten years later, New London vanished, and Greentown was listed instead, and soon afterwards, it was incorporated as a town. The population quickly exploded to over 1000 people in just 20 years. The National Glass Company produced high-quality glass for a few short years until a fire overtook the building in 1903.

Greentown Area Homes

Greentown is located eight miles east of Kokomo in Howard County on State Road 22/35 and 55 miles north of Indianapolis. There are many good options for commuters. Culture and Entertainment

Main Street doubles as several highways, while Meridian Street is the main north-south road. The Howard County Fairgrounds are just north of the town. The Comet Trail is a trail that is a mile long, located on South Harrison Street. It is named after the local high school mascot. The Historic Downtown Walking Trail is a trail that also allows you to learn more history about the area as well.

There are two locations in town that display historical artifacts. Greentown Glass Museum was dedicated on the 67th anniversary of the burning of the National Glass Company. Over 2,000 pieces of glass and historical items are on display. The Greentown Historical Society has approximately 1,040 artifacts in this permanent collection.

Careers and Industry

The glass factory brought many jobs to the area and marked the town’s main period of industrial activity. When the factory burned down and the natural gas supply drastically declined, Greentown’s population dropped by about 10 percent and the town as a whole suffered severe loss of revenue. However, the town has since doubled in size of its industrial peak.

Manufacturing is still the most common industry in the Greentown area. Other common industries include retail trade, health care and social assistance, construction, transportation and warehousing, and utilities. Agriculture has played a role in the local economy since the town was founded and continues to thrive in the area. Greentown is a haven for medical professionals. It is surrounded by 21 hospitals within a 30-mile radius.

Schools

Greentown is a rural community with a quality school system. The Eastern Howard School Corporation has two outstanding schools: Eastern Elementary School and Eastern Junior-Senior High School. Students compete at the highest levels academically and have many opportunities for development beyond the academics with numerous co-curricular and extracurricular activities. For example, The Community Garden is a project of the Eastern Howard School Corporation and the Greentown Main Street Association.  For parents interested in the arts, the schools have a fantastic reputation for providing an outstanding experience in art and music with state recognition for the band, choirs, and orchestra.

The corporation is proud to offer a world language curriculum for Grades K-12; a nationally-recognized robotics team; the only high school orchestra in Howard County; and an iPad for every K-12 student to use at home and at school as part of the “everywhere-all-the-time” mobile technology initiative. Eastern Junior-Senior High School has been named multiple times “one of the best high schools in the United States” by U.S. News and World Report, and this year the school is continuing to be innovative by being the first school in the Howard County to pilot “blended learning," or classroom instruction combined with digital/online media instruction.
