Hamlet is a town in Starke County. The town is named after John Hamlet, who established the town in 1863. The lands of the area were flat, slowly-drained marsh, and swamp with sandy, wooded knolls and highlands in and around the sides of the valley. Early inhabitants were hunters and farmers. They lived and farmed on the sandy highlands and fished and hunted in the swamps and marshes.

Today, those marshes and swamps are gone, and the lush Kankakee Valley has taken their place. It’s a great place to call home. Hamlet Area Homes

Hamlet lies on US-30, about two miles east of US-35. Hamlet is the midway point between both Chicago and Fort Wayne; it’s about 80 miles to either city. Plymouth, Grovertown, and Knox are other towns located close to Hamlet. We invite you to this area that is in the middle of an exciting region. Shopping and Dining

There are very few stores in Hamlet itself, so residents head over to either Plymouth or Valparaiso to do grocery shopping, look for household items, or anything else they might be looking for. These areas are large enough to contain nationally recognized stores next to locally owned specialty stores.

There are great restaurants, along with a great shopping center, in the Hamlet area. Gina Marie's in Knox is a busy restaurant that serves delicious pizza. Christo’s Family Dining in La Porte serves gyros, sandwiches, and a full dinner menu. Downtown Depot in Knox is a fun place to go with good food, daily specials, and special events. Fingerhut Bakery, also in Knox, is the go-to spot for sweet treats. Country Garden Restaurant has a nice salad bar, delicious soups, and a great lunch and dinner menu.

Culture and Entertainment

Located among the rolling fields of the Indiana prairie, Koontz Lake has been a much-loved

destination for generations of visitors. Koontz Lake is an all-sports lake, and there is a public swimming beach and public boat launch. It is well known as a fishing lake. Potato Creek State Park is located about 15 miles northeast of Koontz Lake. The park offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding trails, and wildlife viewing areas.

About 25 miles from Koontz Lake, South Bend offers a variety of cultural activities centered around the University of Notre Dame. A perennial favorite among sports fans, the College Football Hall of Fame is filled with sports memorabilia. Snite Museum of Art is close by, and presents collections of art and art education activities for visitors.

South Bend also has the Studebaker National Museum, showcasing a collection of these legendary automobiles and memorabilia. About 45 miles northwest of Koontz Lake, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore encompasses 15 miles of Lake Michigan Beach and contains over 90 threatened or endangered species of plants. The park is known for its “singing sands,” a particular type of sand that emits sound in response to wind under certain circumstances.

Careers and Industry

Drainage work in Stark County was begun in the early 1900s, allowing most of the area to be productive farmland with open ditches and underground tile lines. That work contributes to the economy in the 21st century. Corn, soybeans, mint, hay, Christmas trees, strawberries, blueberries, vegetables, and other crops provide a source of income for today's farmers. These farmers rely on the products and services of agribusinesses in the area. One of these is Chester’s Ag Systems Division, a company that sells and services irrigation systems and deals with grain handling and storage facilities.

Manufacturing, like agribusiness, is a common industry in the Hamlet area. Hoosier Custom Plastics, specializing in tight tolerance and plastic insert molding applications, is one local manufacturer. Other companies in the area include Kemin Industries, which manufactures over 500 specialty ingredients that enhance nutrition and health for humans and animals, and J.W. Hicks, which provides refractory products and services for the metal industry. Other common industries are represented by major employers in the area.
