The town of Upland can be found in Grant County. Although the first known purchase of land in Upland was in the 1830s, it wasn’t until later in the 1860s that the town was formed. By the 1880s, the town had a booming population and had started a school system for the children, opened a few stores, and was home to a saw mill and a blacksmith store.
Today, the town isn’t exactly what you’d call large, but it is what you’d call an amazing community. The people here are proud of their town and have many reasons to be. There’s plenty of great people around, plenty to do, and easy access to the entire state area by means of the nearby roads. If you want to live somewhere with a small-town feel but big-town amenities, Upland should be high on your list.
Upland Area Homes
With a population of around 4,000 people, residents enjoy the benefits of this small-town while also enjoying access to the modern-day amenities that make this the perfect place to call home. It’s a growing community with a strong reputation that draws new people in by the year. You can rest assured you and your family will feel welcomed when you live in Upland.
Upland has two local papers for residents: SEG-way News and The Courier. These newspapers offer residents the latest updates on school information, news, events, fire and police calls, and local business advertisements. There is also the Marion Chronicle-Tribune, which is the newspaper that serves the whole county.
The town has its own police department, volunteer fire department, and ambulance service to assist the residents of this town. There is also the Grant County Sheriff’s Department, serving Upland as well.
With I-69 just east of town, it makes it very easy to travel to nearby and larger cities like Indianapolis, approximately 60 miles southwest, and Fort Wayne, which is about 45 miles northeast of Upland. Proximity to towns like Muncie, Kokomo, and Marion also make living in Upland very convenient.
Shopping and Dining
If you live in Upland, you must visit Ivanhoe’s. This place is the town’s most famous restaurant, and it’s known to serve up the best ice cream around with over 100 milkshake varieties. There are so many stores in town which will satisfy your basic shopping needs; however, there are also plenty of specialty stores.
There are plenty of great little restaurants in town where you’ll find will serve almost anything you crave. And of course, you’re never too far from larger towns like Muncie and Kokomo if you’re looking for something different as well.
Culture and Entertainment
Although Upland is home to only a few thousand residents, there is much history and culture to enjoy in this little town. The town is set out on the outskirts of Taylor Wilderness, a gorgeous park which offers visitors plenty of trails to enjoy, water, and much more.
The town also enjoys an elaborate Labor Day weekend festival each year. The Upland Lion’s Club Park holds events with music and more the whole weekend long while a town-wide yard sale is held on the Saturday of this weekend. The final day of the festivities is host to the annual car show at the Community Park, and there is a parade that goes down Main Street on Labor Day Monday with over 100 floats and participants.
There is also a “Blooms and Berries” festival held on the second Saturday of June annually. The Indiana Poetry Festival is in April and honors Barton Rees Pogue, a former Upland resident. On the first Sunday in December, you can enjoy the “Old Tyme Christmas” events in town.
You can also visit the historic train depot and a 1923 Pennsylvania Railroad caboose in town. There are four beautiful parks, and there’s even a sports complex to enjoy your favorite activities.
Career and Industry
With Upland being the home to Taylor University, there are plenty of opportunities to work within the educational system in various capacities like food services, recreation, administration, and more. Avis International is also located within Upland, which provides many residents with great opportunities within the manufacturing industry as well.
With the variety of stores in town, you can also find work within the retail trade here in town or in nearby Marion or Muncie. There are also some opportunities within the hospitality and tourism fields as there are restaurants, hotels, and many other facilities around town.
Of course, being so close to Muncie, Marion, Kokomo and other larger towns as well as within one hour of either Indianapolis or Fort Wayne, there are also a slew of employment opportunities in many neighboring cities for residents of Upland. The accessibility of I-69 makes the commute easy as well, so you can spend more time at home with your family instead of on the road.
Schools
Students living in Upland attend Eastbrook South Elementary School starting in kindergarten and later attend Eastbrook Junior High and Eastbrook High School, which are both located just north of Upland.
If you have children attending elementary, junior high, or high school, you’ll be happy to know they are in great hands and will have some of the best education in the state of Indiana.
Of course, Upland is home to Taylor University, a nationally acclaimed Christian college, which dates back over one hundred years. The university was originally located in Fort Wayne, but it faced financial hardships. When the gas boom of the 1890s started in Upland, the town offered the university some money and acreage to move locations, and it did just that in 1893.
There are also many other great post-secondary schools nearby including Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, and many campuses in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne for Indiana University and Purdue University among others.
