Originally the area of Churubusco was made up of two towns, Union and Franklin, founded in the 19th century. Residents were looking for a patriotic name for the location of the new post office that would serve both towns, settled on naming it after the site of the 1847 Battle of Churubusco, Mexico during the Mexican-American War. The area is still populated by patriotic, industrious people who are proud of their heritage.

Churubusco Area Homes

Churubusco, often shortened to Busco, is located near the headwaters of the Eel River in the extreme northeast corner of Whitley County, about 16 miles northwest of Fort Wayne. US-33 runs from Elkhart to Fort Wayne and serves as the Main Street in several communities, including Dunlap, Goshen, and Churubusco. US-33 intersects State Road 205 in Churubusco, which will take you to southwest to Columbia City.

Churubusco is located less than 20 miles from I-69, a gateway to many other communities across the state. Shopping and Dining

Shoppers can find many types of specialty stores in the area including shops on Main Street like Anchored Threads leathergoods shop, The Bargain House furniture store, and K & K’s Video and Books. Jefferson Pointe Shopping Center is an open-air mall in Fort Wayne that features many stores in a beautiful setting that encourages shoppers to walk around and see what nature offers as well as what the stores have to offer. Residents don’t have to go far to find a good restaurant. The Magic Wand, serving burgers, ice cream and much more, is a family friendly diner that is decorated with hundreds of clowns. Culture and Entertainment

The Churubusco History Center, located downtown, hosts the great history of Churubusco and the surrounding areas. The center contains artifacts and exhibits such as postcards, signs, and advertising items from local businesses. Churubusco Community Park is a 60-acre park that offers fun in the sun including a “splash pad” that is refreshing on hot days. Residents can also enjoy other parks in the area. Churubusco is in lake country, and it’s a small boater's paradise. Eight connecting lakes run through Chain O’ Lakes State Park. Perfect for hikers and nature watchers alike, the 200 acres of restored native prairie provide nesting habitat for grassland bird species as well as habitat for wildlife.

The town has an annual festival called Turtle Days rooted in the lore of the Beast of Busco, a giant snapping turtle named Oscar. Reportedly this giant turtle haunts nearby Fulk's Lake in Allen County. Oscar is thought to be the size of a small car but has never been found, even though the lake was drained. A popular theory as to why this turtle is so elusive is because the lakes and ponds around Churubusco are connected through an extensive series of channels and streams. Some of these are actually underground tunnels.

Careers and Industry

Manufacturing is the most common industry in the Churubusco area. Close to half of the workforce is involved in this industry and are employed for companies like C & A Tool, a national and international contract tooling manufacturer. Parkview Whitley Hospital is one of the largest employers in the county. Many residents are employed in the agricultural industry, an important industry throughout the history of the town. Companies like AG Plus serve this industry. Other common industries in the area include retail and wholesale trade, construction, information, transportation and warehousing, administrative support, and waste management services.

Schools

Churubusco Junior/Senior High School and Churubusco Elementary School, superior schools in a supportive community, together form the Smith-Green Community Schools district. The elementary school embraces the values of the community and weaves the academic rigor of the 21st century to provide all children an inviting, meaningful, experienced-based curriculum utilizing best practices of instruction.

The junior high and high school provide excellence in education, promote lifelong learning and prepare students for an evolving world. Students may take vocational classes to prepare for a career after completing high school. All students are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities to enhance their education. For those that want to further their education after they graduate, three colleges or universities are located nearby in Fort Wayne: University of Saint Francis-Fort Wayne, University-Purdue University-Fort Wayne, and Indiana Institute of Technology.
