Covington Area Homes

This city lies in the western part of Fountain County along the Wabash River where US-136 crosses the river. Interstate 74 passes about a half mile to the south of the city. Covington is 27 miles northwest of Crawfordsville, 45 miles north of Terre Haute, 11 miles east of Danville, Illinois, and southwest of Lafayette. Shopping and Dining

The courthouse is surrounded by many retail shops and restaurants, and many of these are in the downtown area. Antique, specialty, discount, and general merchandise shops offer a variety of goods to interested shoppers. Everyone can find their favorite foods in Covington as well as some new foods that are sure to become favorites. Many of these restaurants and shops are located along US-136. 

Culture and Entertainment

The Fountain County Clerk's Building is a local history museum. Built in 1842 by county commissioners as a fire-safe depository for county records, it originally sat on the courthouse square and housed the first law office of author, statesman, and inventor Lew Wallace. It was sold in 1859 and moved two blocks to its current location where it was used as a private residence for 140 years. In 2005 it was restored for use as a local history depository.

For outdoor fun, Covington Park offers picnic areas, soccer and other ball fields, tennis courts, a large playground, a bandstand, basketball courts, a log cabin, wooded areas as well as open areas for recreation. It is a great place to have a picnic or get some exercise. The Covington Circle Trail, located in the heart of Covington, begins in the park and meanders through its beautiful scenery. Upon exiting the park, the trail becomes very quiet, covering farmlands, wetlands reserve, a spring, Covington High School, and crosses the former Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Western rail line. The trail also cross two historic bridges and features several varieties of trees and shrubs, and wildlife can often be seen from the trail.

Careers and Industry

The town lies in an agricultural and bituminous coal area. At one time, the majority of residents worked as farmers or miners. Today, the most common industry in the area is manufacturing. Other common industries include retail trade, construction, public administration, accommodation and food services, wholesale trade, and healthcare and social assistance. Local main trades include diversified agriculture, farm produce, fruit, canned goods shipping, and sand and gravel pits.

Schools

The Covington Community School Corporation consists of one elementary school, one middle school, and one high school. The high school has an excellent vocational education program. Covington Schools provide all students with a well-balanced educational curriculum and many extra-curricular opportunities. The schools and community at large are partners in the well-being and development of the younger generation. Covington Community Schools does not stop at educating students but strives to engage the entire community as a whole.

The elementary school strives to provide an educational program that inspires and intellectually challenges all students to reach their potential to become self-confident, self-directed learners. Covington is surrounded by good vocational and higher education schools. Danville Area Community College and a vocational school in Danville, Illinois are located 15 miles away. There are several optimal colleges and universities within 50 miles: Purdue University and Ivy Tech State College in Lafayette; University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois; Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, and Ivy Tech State College in Terre Haute; and St. Mary-of-the-Woods in West Terre Haute.
