Although the first pioneers in Spencer County were working the land when it was first settled in 1818 (they even built a log cabin school), the town of Dale was not officially organized until 1843. The town was named after Robert Dale Owen, a member of the US Congress around that time. President Abraham Lincoln spent his formative years in Spencer County in southern Indiana.

Shoppers can find discount, general merchandise, and specialty stores in town. The Grainery Country Store is located in Dale along a peaceful, hilly road. It’s a country store and flea market rolled into one – and it has animals. Chickens, goats, ducks, and a donkey run around the property and enjoy the shade of a large tree on hot days.

Diners can find many restaurants with mouthwatering dishes and desserts. Wendell’s Cafe has really good food and delicious pies. Los Dos Charros Mexican Restaurant offers great Mexican food like beef chimichangas (actually made with steak) and seasoned just right. Jenk’s Pizza has much more than pizza pies: you can also enjoy a yummy western omelette and German fries for breakfast.

Culture and Entertainment

The North Spencer Community Center provides indoor recreational activities in the refurbished gym. The outdoor facilities include three lighted baseball fields, playground equipment, and one lighted tennis court. The Yellow Banks Recreation Center provides outdoor recreational activities.

The campground offers relaxation and a huge sand beach to lay out on. There is a picnic area, bicycle trails, and fishing at a 32-acre stocked fishing lake. Usually scheduled for early September, the Dale Fall Fest attracts hundreds of people from all over Spencer County and other surrounding counties. It’s the county's largest street festival with live entertainment, food booths, rides, competitions, and the annual Dale Fall Fest parade.

Dr. Ted’s Musical Marvels is a unique attraction in Dale that holds large musical instruments like calliopes, player pianos, orchestrions, and street pianos. Visitors don’t just walk around looking at the mechanical musical instruments, they get to hear them. Several other attractions are located in Spencer County including Lincoln Pioneer Village, an unusual example of an educational tourist attraction based on local history. It represents buildings that existed during Abraham Lincoln's life in Spencer County.

The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial preserves the farm site where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family from 1816 to 1830. As one of the largest roofed amphitheatres in the nation, Lincoln Amphitheatre is a majestic 1,500-seat outdoor venue located in the woods Abraham Lincoln walked as a boy. For more local history, visit the Colonel William Jones State Historic Site. Located about 10 minutes away, Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari is a combination theme park and waterpark that is sure to please everyone.     

Careers and Industry

Dale bustles with industry and service sector jobs. The town is ideally-situated close to Interstate 64 and has experienced significant commercial growth including the building of two hotels. The town's industrial park is home to two well-established and thriving companies, Spencer Plastics and Thermwood Industries. The most common industry in Dale is manufacturing. Other common industries are retail trade; wholesale trade; construction; public administration; agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting; administrative and support; and waste management service.

The towns of Dale, Chrisney, and Santa Claus along with several small bedroom communities attend North Spencer County School Corporation. This school district includes the David Turnham Elementary School, located in Dale. The school emphasizes reading, writing, arithmetic, respect, and responsibility. All students are supported in their development of good character and citizenship traits. The corporation also includes Heritage Hills Middle School and Heritage Hills High School.

The mission of Heritage Hills Middle School is to meet the needs of all students. Students with special needs are served in an inclusive environment with a full continuum of services available. The school prepares students to be respectful and responsible lifelong learners, and the school community pledges to achieve the core beliefs through their mission: to have students succeed at their highest potential. Heritage Hills High School campus sits on 67 acres consisting of four buildings, a high school building, a middle school building, a Career Technical Education building, and an auxiliary gymnasium. The high school has been recognized with a Four Star School Award by the Indiana Department of Education numerous times.
