Culture and Entertainment
Danville history has been kept alive through the preservation of numerous historical sites within the city. The Hendricks County Historical Museum is located in the former sheriff's residence and jail. The building was erected in 1866 and served as the county jail until 1974. The two-story brick structure, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is the only surviving example of the Second Empire style of architecture in the county. This style was popular after the American Civil War and has the defining elements of a central tower and mansard roof. The museum's collection includes items relating to domestic life, agriculture, military history, education, and other aspects of the county's heritage.
Restoration of the courthouse interior, which was completed in 2004, provides the public a chance to view the interior decorations, woodwork, stained glass windows and murals of this important piece of Danville history in their original splendor. Both the structure and the contents of the Danville’s Community Library are of interest to those in search of local history.
In addition to historical sites, there are two parks in town for everyone to enjoy. Ellis Park is located near downtown Danville boasting woods and trails and consists mainly of recreational areas. Blanton Woods Nature Park showcases upland forest, open meadows, and a lower floodplain.
