The tracks can still be seen to this day along State Road 47 with its numerous wood-pile trestles. The Darlington Covered Bridge, built in 1968, is 0.6 miles west of town. Today, Darlington residents live in an area that is easily accessible to nearby towns and cities. This town is located just eight miles northeast of Crawfordsville off of State Road 47 between Lafayette and Indianapolis. I-65 is located east of the Darlington, US Route 231 to the west, and US Route 52 to the north, giving residents here easy access to wherever you need to be. Darlington General Store serves breakfast and lunch, and after enjoying a tasty meal, diners can shop for gifts and antiques, then get a treat to take home from the bakery. Johnny Provolone's Pizza has something for everyone from hand-tossed to Chicago- and New York-style pizza to wings, pastas, subs, and desserts. The Sweet and Salty, open during the summer months, is an ice cream parlor and sandwich shop that attracts a crowd of people on hot summer days. Culture and Entertainment
Darlington is a charming town with fun events for all to enjoy. Whether it’s a visit to the covered bridge, an event at Darlington Community Center or Darlington Toll House, enjoying the fun at the annual Fish Fry and Festival, or just a relaxing day the park, Darlington is a great place to spend some time. Old School Park has fields of open space to enjoy plus a playground, areas for several sports, a walking track, and two shelters with picnic tables. The town hosts Darlington Fish Fry and Festival in September. The festival is located downtown on Main Street with antique cars and tractors on display, games for all ages, a fish fry, music, a parade, and plenty of vendors.
Several farms in the area raise produce and other crops and livestock, and there are some that offer u-pick opportunities, items for sale, and even events for families. One of these is Trinity Acres Farm, a sustainable farm located on the edge of Darlington. Their goal is to build the healthiest soil possible that will grow healthy and strong plants that feed their livestock and the community. Emmert Honey Creek Farms raises Fullblood Reds, Paints, and Traditional Boer Goats just east of Darlington on State Road 47. Potato Creek Farms raises cattle, hogs, and show pleasure horses. The owners even offer horseback riding lessons.
Careers and Industry
The community is a mix of rural farming, light industrial manufacturing, and service companies. Manufacturing is the most common industry in Darlington. In fact more than half of those employed work in this industry. Other common industries include construction; wholesale trade; public administration; accommodation and food services; transportation and warehousing; and agriculture, forestry, fishing, and hunting.
Two of the businesses in town are B&H Industries, an industrial equipment supplier, and Spi Binding Company, a mechanical bookbinder. Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health, the hospital that serves the area, is located in Crawfordsville as well as Koch Industries, one of the largest private companies in the US.
Schools
The North Montgomery Community School Corporation consists of five schools: North Montgomery High School, Northridge Middle School, Lester B. Sommer Elementary, Pleasant Hill Elementary, and Sugar Creek Elementary School. The student to teacher ratio is approximately 20:1. North Montgomery High School has earned Four-Star School status according to the Indiana Department of Education. The school provides multiple dual (HS/college) credit and Advance Placement options for high school students. High ability programs are offered PK-12 through clustering, acceleration, Advance Placement, honors, and dual credit course offerings. The school offers a full array of academic teams, student organizations, fine arts experiences, clubs, and athletic opportunities for all students.
For those looking to pursue secondary education, Wabash College is located in Crawfordville, and these schools are within a 40-mile radius of Darlington: Purdue University-Main Campus (Lafayette), ITT Technical Institute-Indianapolis, DePauw University (Greencastle), Marian University (Indianapolis), Butler University (Indianapolis), Ivy Tech Community College (various locations), Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis.
