Named after the city in Greece, Delphi was formally established as a town in 1835 and incorporated as a city in 1866. The Wabash and Erie Canal had made its way to Fort Wayne in 1840 and by 1843, it connected Delphi with Toledo, opening the area to commerce with the east. Ten years later, the canal was completed all the way to Evansville in order to connect with the Ohio River and finally to New Orleans via the Mississippi River. Three decades after this, railroad transportation made the canal system obsolete, and a new era with new businesses began.

The main year-round attraction at Wabash & Erie Canal Park is its Interpretive Center, which contains interactive displays explaining the history and operation of the Canal. This is the only accessible place remaining in the state where the historic canal is water-filled. The replica canal boat, The Delphi, offers rides on the Canal.

The Delphi Community School Corporation serves the west central part of Carroll County including Delphi.
