Culture and Entertainment
Marktown is an urban-planned worker community in East Chicago built in 1917; it transformed marshland to provide a complete community for workers at The Mark Manufacturing Company. It has a unique design in which the streets serve as walkways and the cars are parked on the sidewalks. Today, Marktown is one of the few planned worker communities in which all of the originally constructed homes still stand. It’s regarded as an important cultural resource of architectural and historical significance and is a symbol of the traditional, yet innovative, spirit found in the city.
After a stop at historic Marktown, visitors can spend some time at one of the eight city parks playing a game of miniature golf, splashing around at the pool, or flying down the waterslide. Schools
The School City of East Chicago school district includes eight schools that serve Grades preK-12. There are five elementary schools, two middle schools, and a high school. The district focuses on working toward all of its students graduating and achieving their goals but also having all of their students act as active agents transforming the social and economical landscape of East Chicago. Strategic Planning for the school district is always being developed, under construction, and monitored with appropriate course corrections. With hard work from students, parents, teachers, and administrators, all graduates will possess the knowledge and competency to be college and career ready.
