Ferdinand was founded in 1840 by Joseph Kundek and named after Emperor Ferdinand I of Austria. It was mostly settled by German-speaking people from central Europe. At one time Ferdinand was known as the “wooden shoe village.” By the end of the 19th century, Ferdinand contained many businesses including a machine works, a brick works, brewery, several taverns, and a dairy. Ferdinand was incorporated as a town in 1905.

The Monastery of Immaculate Conception is a place of heritage and beauty. Known as the
"Castle on the Hill," the monastery is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of
Benedictine women. The distinctive, recently-restored Romanesque dome rises majestically over the town of Ferdinand. If you look closely, there are 89 angels are present throughout the church. The church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Guided tours are also available. The monastery gift shop, "For Heaven's Sake," offers handmade crafts from the sisters and other unique spiritual merchandise. The Kordes Center, also on the monastery grounds, offers a peaceful and rejuvenating getaway.
Ferdinand's parks are beautiful and well kept. The town is home to three lakes, all within minutes of others including Huntingburg Lake, Lincoln State Park, and Patoka Lake. Ferdinand is a dream-come-true for those who love the outdoors. Ferdinand Forest is just a few minutes outside the city limits and offers camping, hunting, swimming, fishing, hiking, and nature watching. For the amusement park fun-seeker, Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana is just 15 minutes south of Ferdinand off of Hwy 162.

Access to quality education is important to the community. Ferdinand is home to Ferdinand Elementary and Forest Park Jr./Sr. High School. These institutions offer ideal student-to-teacher ratios and numerous academic and extracurricular programs. The Southeast Dubois County School Corporation has earned the highest category placement, an “A” rating, by the Indiana Department of Education’s annual accountability of schools.
Forest Park Jr./Sr. High School is a 7-12 grade school that offers fifteen dual credit courses to its students in various areas of study. Three of these classes are also presented as Advanced Placement courses. The boys basketball program won back-to-back state championships (2004-5/2005-6). The girls softball team took the state title for the 2000-2001 season.The marching band, known as the Marching Rangers, has won nine state championships since 1973.
Vincennes University is a two-year state college located in Vincennes and has a satellite campus in Jasper, just twenty minutes north of Ferdinand. For those who welcome a longer drive, educational institutions such as Indiana University South in New Albany, University of Louisville, University of Evansville, University of Southern Indiana, and Oakland City University provide further choices.
