Shoppers can find specialty shops in Garrett and other areas in the region, and there are also shopping malls in nearby Fort Wayne. Glenbrook Square is a two-level mall that offers many specialty shops and large chain stores as well as many eateries. The JAM Recreation Center offers many community activities, and the Garrett County Club has an 18-hole public golf course.

With a short drive to Fort Wayne, residents can enjoy festivals, concerts, and other events at Headwaters Park, and they can fish, boat, and hike at Hurshtown Reservoir. There are three museums that are also close to the city. Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum, a National Historic Landmark, is dedicated to preserving these classic cars for public display. Visitors can see many types of windmills at Mid-America Windmill Museum. And the Hoosier Air Museum is dedicated to the preservation of aviation history from its inception to the present.

Manufacturing is the largest industry in the area, employing about half the working population of the area. There are several large employers in Garrett. Garrett-Keyser-Butler Community School District strives to empower students to be the leaders of their own learning. Garrett has been one of the highest ranked schools in northern Indiana. To insure that students leave prepared to face the global challenges that lie ahead, they study a rigorous curriculum with enhanced learning opportunities.

Elementary students use the Mass Customized Learning program. All K-8 students have iPads and all 9-12 students have MacBooks to aid in the customization of student learning. Game-based learning along with augmented reality has strengthened the engagement of students during the school day. School instruction strives to prepare students for a career or higher education. There are 19 colleges and universities within a 50-mile radius of Garrett.
