Gwynneville is a small town located in the Hanover Township of Shelby County off of US-52, not far from the town of Morrisville and less than hour’s commute to Indianapolis.

Gwynneville was a settlement as far back as 1860 when hundreds of acres of the forested, swampy land in the area was purchased by Irish landowner O’Brien Gwynn. A large sawmill began being operated in the area, cutting down the virgin timber and leading to its earliest village name of Gwynn’s Mill; the land was eventually made useful as a settlement area, bringing in residents from the surrounding areas.

Careers and Industry

Based on the largest natural resource in the area, gas is a strong industry in Gwynneville. Another large industry here is the tomato cannery which began in 1928 as the Gwynneville Canning Factory. Operating today as the Roach-Indiana Corporation, the cannery provided income to families throughout the depression and continues to offer employment to the people of Gwynneville.

Many of the residents of Gwynneville undertake the daily commute to Indianapolis and other larger cities where there are more employment and career opportunities with higher salaries. Schools

Gwynneville has a rich history when it comes to its educational community as well; the first school “the Dormer” was built on the south side of the major route of US-52. Later the school was moved a half mile west of Gwynneville to a one-room brick building in 1880. A three-room school was used for the children of Gwynneville until the school was consolidated with the neighboring city of Morristown around 1919, where students still attend today.

With less than a five-minute drive between the two towns, the commute for residents of Gwynneville is next to nothing. There are two schools here, educating both students of Gwynneville and Morristown: Morristown Elementary School and Morristown Junior – Senior High School. New Palestine High School is located further west on US-52, offering an additional option for secondary school students of the area.
