In the 19th century, a dance hall was built above Henry Haub's original complex of stores. This complex then became known as The Log Inn, the area's famous restaurant. President Lincoln once visited this stage-coach stop turned down-home eatery for family-style American eats. While visiting The Log Inn, you can dine in the same original log room that Abraham Lincoln visited in 1844. The Log Inn is officially recognized as the oldest restaurant in Indiana. Today, it’s where you go if you’re looking for a taste of Southern Indiana homestyle cooking.

After eating a delicious meal at the historic inn, visitors can spend the day shopping. Specialty, antique, and discount stores will satisfy your shopping needs. Culture and Entertainment

Tri-State Speedway is a one-quarter mile high-banked dirt oval racetrack. This race track presents the very best in open-wheel modified racing action to accompany most of the other racing events scheduled. Free camping is also permitted.

Head to Weather Rock Campground, which is located less than two miles from the intersection of US-41 and I-64 and just two miles from the I-69 Corridor. The campground includes a playground where the kids will find a 1954 roundabout merry-go-round from the Sunset Drive Inn, the first McDonald’s Spiral slide in the area, and tons of swings.

There is also pond catch-and-release fishing. Adults can enjoy a game of mini-golf or horseshoes. For more outdoor fun, head to the park in Haubstadt where you can enjoy a picnic or hike around the park, and the kids can enjoy the playground where there are slides, swings, and so much more.

Careers and Industry

Manufacturing is the most common industry in the Haubstadt area. Other common industries include transportation and warehousing; construction; retail trade; finance and insurance; information; and professional, scientific, and technical services. Specifically, the top manufacturing industry is the bituminous coal and lignite surface mining industry. There are more than 3,000 business establishments in Haubstadt with fewer than ten employees, which is a good indicator of the entrepreneurship in the community.

Schools

The South Gibson School Corporation is the largest of the three public schools governing the enrollment and boundaries covered in Gibson County. These facilities include two schools for the Haubstadt area. Haubstadt Community School serves Grades K-8, and Gibson Southern High School serves Grades 9-12. The corporation is progressive; in 2011 a 2.4 kW Wind Turbine was installed at the rear of the Haubstadt Community School property. The corporation plans to eventually install turbines at its other facilities in the future, which may result in income as the corporation sells off unused power from the turbines.

Both schools in the corporation are Four Star schools as awarded by the Indiana Department of Education. Gibson Southern is a great place for students to grow academically and socially and to get have a meaningful four-year high school experience. There is something for everyone. The curriculum, course offerings, co-curricular and extracurricular activities are challenging to students and go above and beyond in meeting their needs. The success of the school is made possible because of the strong partnership and involvement with the parents of the students. Nearly 80% of graduates pursue post-secondary education.

Gibson Southern High School is very close to several institutions of higher learning: Oakland City University, University of Southern Indiana (Evansville), University of Evansville, Vincennes University, Ivy Tech (Evansville), ITT Tech (Newburgh), and Harrison College (Evansville).
