Huntingburg is home to four local parks including the very popular Huntingburg Park, most notable for being the league stadium home of the Dubois County Bombers. In addition to the impressive local ball field, Huntingburg Park is 40 acres with a walking path that includes a swimming pool, baseball and softball fields, tennis courts, shelter houses, horseshoe pitches, and playground equipment.
Other parks include the Charles C. Niehaus Memorial Park, Southside Park, and the local Bark Park. The local parks include such amenities as a driving range and target greens for the recreational golfer and a number of baseball fields. The local Bark Park is a wonderful one-acre park to take the family pet for some local socialization. Baseball is a popular sport in this area, and it should come as no surprise that Huntingburg is the birthplace of two famous baseball players: Cincinnati Reds 2005 Major League Player Alex Graman and the famous Bob Coleman.
Huntingburg has four main events each year including Herbsfest in September, Haunted Huntingburg in October, Christmas Stroll in early November, and Old Fashioned Christmas in December. Herbsfest is a community event aimed at the celebration of the local heritage complete with a parade, a craft show/flea market, food and activity booths, and even a pageant. It takes place every September, and this is a great way to get to know the community and have plenty of family fun. During Haunted Huntingburg, the whole community is turned into a spook-tacular city as neighbors compete to see who can make their house the most frightening. Ghost Tours are available during this weekend event, and the community can hear celebrated ghost stories told about the buildings located on historic 4th Street. There are also scary movie showings, a 5K zombie walk, Ping-Pong tournaments, and costume contests located around the city.
The Christmas Stroll marks the start of the holiday season in southern Indiana. Your family can enjoy the full experience of a Victorian Christmas with Strolling Christmas Carolers, Holiday Home Tours, and the famous Cookie Walk. The Christmas celebrations don’t just start in November; they continue into December with the “Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration” beginning with the Lighted Christmas Parade. The day ends with a performance of “A Night in Bethlehem” at the local Salem Church.
