Straughn is a small town full of rich history, dating back to the early 1800s. Named after Merriman Straughn who arrived in 1822 when there was nothing but wilderness in its place. Most of that wilderness has been tamed now but not so much that you still can’t find some of the great outdoor sights that Indiana is so well known for.
This may be a small town, but that’s one of the things long time residents love. With only a few hundred residents, you’ll never have trouble getting to know all of your neighbors. Straughn admittedly doesn’t have much more than your local small shops to satisfy your basic shopping needs or a small local restaurant for that quick bite with your neighbors. However, Richmond has plenty of shopping centers and even big box stores like Kohl’s and Dillard’s where you can get everything from clothes to housewares.
Richmond is also home to Indiana’s Antique Alley, a 66-mile trail of more than 1200 antique dealers and stores. Antique Alley goes through Wayne County from Richmond to Knightstown, passing right through Straughn. And next door to Straughn is Cambridge City, often considered to be the hub of Antique Alley. Cambridge City has about ten antique stores and a mall all within a three-block radius.

In their short history, the RiverRats have seen some players drafted into Major League Baseball teams like when Kevin Plawecki was a first-round draft pick for the New York Mets in 2012.
