This small town dates back to 1832 when Eden township was formed; however, the city was only platted in 1893 and incorporated about 20 years later in 1913.

The town was originally called Hawpatch. You’ll see that name still used in some form throughout the city and its businesses. In fact the post office was originally called “Haw Patch.” In 1893 as the Wabash Railroad was being built up, the men suggested the residents change the name of the town to Topeka since it looks a lot like Topeka in Kansas.
