Indianapolis Public Schools

The Indianapolis Public School District covers a large portion of the city of Indianapolis and other areas within the Marion County region. As the largest public school district in Indiana, it is commonly abbreviated as IPS. This comprehensive school district has a clear vision in preparing students for a bright future.

Indianapolis Public Schools are active centers for learning with their own dynamic curricula, competent staff, robust community involvement, active event schedules, and emphasis on individual-based learning. Schools are spread out throughout the city so a child’s home school is not a long drive. The magnet school program is a free program available to all IPS students by application. The magnet program is a set of schools that have a particular field of focus built into the core curriculum, such as Performing Arts or Spanish Immersion. All students in IPS schools receive free breakfast and lunch, and several schools include preschool as part of public school education. Anna Brochhausen School 88

Located on the east side of the city near 16th St and Arlington Ave, this school educates children from preschool through the 6th grade. The building underwent some major renovations and is centered on excellence, utilizing a data-driven program to provide students with the most rigorous, effective education possible.

 

Arlington Woods School 99

This school is near 30th St and Ritter Ave on the east side.  This K-6 elementary school believes in keeping kids focused on their education so that it makes for lifelong learners and cuts down on the amount of unproductive time. Teachers are skilled in teaching to all learning styles to give everyone have the chance to succeed.

 

Brookside School 54

This K-6 elementary school near 10th St and Rural St started out as a two-room school back in 1865. Since then, it has grown into a modern building which includes a cafeteria, distance learning room, two playgrounds, 27 classrooms, and a library; artwork decorates the hallways and classrooms throughout the school.

 

Carl Wilde School 79

Located in the northwest corner of Indianapolis near 34th St and Georgetown Rd, this K-6 school places a special emphasis on providing students with a well-rounded, holistic learning experience. If you are interested in a school that will afford your child a solid education in all the major subjects, Carl Wilde may be your school of choice.

 

Center for Inquiry School 2

This magnet school is located in the heart of downtown near St. Clair St and New Jersey St, near the Indianapolis Cultural Trail. This K-8 school follows the International Baccalaureate curriculum, which promotes the critical thinking and cultural understanding necessary in being a global citizen.

 

Center for Inquiry School 27

One of the three Center for Inquiry schools, School 27 is located near 16th St and College Ave, adjacent to the famous Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Park. Also following the International Baccalaureate curriculum, students here are challenged to learn beyond where they thought possible, creating responsible, lifelong learners.

 

Center for Inquiry School 84

Students here at the Center for Inquiry School 84, located on the north side near 57th St and Central Ave, are part of the magnet program with IPS schools. Critical thinking and problem solving skills are the focus of their learning, and teachers encourage students to find the answers to their own questions, helping to shape their own education as knowledge-seekers. 

 

Charles Warren Fairbanks School 105

This K-6 elementary school is near 42nd St and Post Rd on the northeast side of Indianapolis. School 105 focuses on core subjects and rewards positive behavior to those who show respect, responsibility, and cooperation with others. Students also have opportunities to join clubs and athletic activities as well.

 

Christian Park School 82

Christian Park teachers understand the need for students to get a firm grasp of the core subjects at an early age.  This K-6 school located near English Ave and Emerson Ave on the southeast side of the district offers a caring and nurturing environment with plenty of academic support.

 

Clarence Farrington School 61

School 61 educates students from Kindergarten through the 6th grade. This elementary school is located on the northwest side near 30th St and Georgetown Rd. Teachers and staff work with parents to provide the best education for Clarence Farrington School 61 students. Early literacy skills are always a primary focus, and teachers utilize new technology to help students reach their reading goals.

 

Cold Spring School

This school is located on Cold Spring Rd just north of the Marian University campus.  This K-6 school serves as the magnet school for environmental studies.  Centered on a 39-acre campus, Cold Spring School teachers take core subjects such as English, math, science, social studies, and the related arts and tie these lessons in with the environment.

 

Daniel Webster School 46

Receiving a B rating from the Indiana Department of Education, Daniel Webster students not only study the core subjects, but they are also taught valuable lessons on giving back to the community. Literacy is a priority in this K-8 school, and together with support from Kroger, students have access to Accelerated Reader quizzes and the Young Hoosier Book Award Program. Older students have the opportunity to join clubs and athletics teams.

 

Elder W. Diggs School 42

Located near 25th St and Martin Luther King Jr Dr just north of downtown, this school houses pre-K classes through the 6th grade. Maintaining healthy bodies as well as healthy minds is part of the philosophy here at Elder W. Diggs.  Fun activities and field trips are available for students who meet educational and behavior goals.

 

Eleanor Skillen School 34

Tucked away in the Garfield Park neighborhood near I-65 and Raymond St, pre-K through 6th grade students have access to state-of-the-art technology in the classrooms.  Literacy and math readiness skills are crucial to their standards-based education.  Students at Eleanor Skillen also have opportunities to join in clubs such as basketball, science discovery, and Chinese.

 

Eliza A. Blaker School 55

School 55 is located on 54th St near the Monon Trail and the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood. Educating pre-K students through the 6th grade, this school supports their students’ educational success by getting families involved in the school and getting students involved in the community. There are a number of resources available for before- and after-school care.

 

Ernie Pyle School 90

Located northwest of the downtown area near 18th St and Tibbs Ave, Ernie Pyle School 90 teaches students who are pre-K through 6th grade. This school has earned an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education. Teachers and staff encourage parents to be active in their child’s education and works to enforce an anti-bully environment in the school to ensure all students have a safe and caring environment to learn.

 

Floro Torrence School 83

At Floro Torrence School 83, students strive to learn self-discipline, respect for themselves and others, and excellence in academics. Students at this K-6 elementary school, located near 42nd St and Post Rd on the northeast side of Indianapolis, also have opportunities to join in Family Night, music programs, archery, basketball, and cheerleading.  

 

Francis Bellamy School 102

This preschool center is located near 36th St and Post Rd on the northeast side of Indianapolis. As the only school in IPS dedicated as a preschool center, teachers here are specially trained in educating the youngest learners.

 

Francis Scott Key School 103

Students at Francis Scott Key School 103 follow the S.T.A.R. Status: Success, Teamwork, Attitude, and Respect. This school, housing pre-K through 6th grade, is located on the northeast side of Indianapolis near 38th St and Post Rd. Teachers here strive to make learning a positive, lifelong experience.

 

Francis W. Parker School 56

This elementary school, which includes pre-K through 8th grade students, is located on the near northside of Indianapolis near 24th St and Dr. Andrew J. Brown Ave. Francis W. Parker School 56 is part of the magnet school program as a Montessori school; Montessori schools are characterized by a freedom of movement within the classroom, uninterrupted work times, and a “discovery” approach to learning.

 

George S. Buck School 94

George S. Buck School 94 utilizes several partners within the community to reinforce the “it takes a village to raise a child” adage. Trained volunteers work one-on-one with students to help students meet literacy goals and to support families in this school community.  This K-6 elementary school, located near 30th and Franklin Rd, also utilizes technology to help students, such as Kahn Academy for math skills.

 

George H. Fisher School 93

George H. Fisher School 93 is a Project RESTORE school: Reshaping an Entire School by Taking Ownership of a Rigorous Education. Teachers and staff at this K-6 school have high expectations for their students, but it doesn’t go without taking place in a caring and nurturing environment. Students who are in the upper grades also have the opportunity to try out for the school basketball team. 

 

George W. Julian School 57

Located in the heart of the historic Irvington neighborhood near Washington St and Ritter Ave, George W. Julian School 57 is a K-6 elementary school committed to excellence in education and received an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education. Although the building itself is over a century old, many of the original parts were saved during renovations which added a gym, cafeteria, more classrooms, an upgraded media center, distance learning classroom, and changes to meet accessibility codes for those with disabilities.

 

George Washington Carver School 87

Set up as part of the magnet school program serving as a Montessori school, this school is centered around children discovering key concepts in a hands-on environment and learning by asking questions. Teachers are specially trained for this unique curriculum.  Students in this K-8 school also focus on becoming global citizens by promoting peace and using problem-solving skills.

 

IPS/Butler University Lab School 60

The Butler Lab School 60, located near 34th St and Pennsylvania St, has a partnership with Butler University. It adopted the educational philosophy of early childhood educational centers in Reggio Emilia, Italy.  Pre-K through 4th grade students here work on a long-term project-based curriculum; children do not have assigned seating, and many classrooms do not even have desks in order to allow students to work how they’re comfortable. Teachers are not locked into rigid schedules and have more flexibility in determining student readiness.

 

James A. Garfield School 31

Located on the south side of the downtown area, this K-8 grade elementary school includes the Phoenix Academy, specially aimed toward students who struggle with regular classroom behaviors. Class sizes are limited to ten students, and teachers are trained to teach students who struggle learning in traditional settings. The school also offers a wide variety of treats for good behavior and excellence in academics to all students. Rugby, basketball, volleyball, soccer, and cheerleading are also available to the older students.

 

James Russell Lowell School 51

James Russell Lowell School 51 is located in the heart of the Brightwood neighborhood near Sherman Ave and Massachusetts Ave, just blocks away from Martin University. Rebuilt in 2006 to allow for the continued growth in this neighborhood, students from pre-K classes through 6th grade get individualized attention and are continually challenged to be the best they can be.

 

James Whitcomb Riley School 43

This K-8 elementary school near 40th St and Capital Ave is located in the historic Butler-Tarkington neighborhood. Teachers here combine the latest in educational techniques with technology and a caring environment to make sure all students have a chance at excelling. School 43 students also have activities such as the choir and special science experiment days that solidify the lessons learned in the classroom and kindle their love of learning.

 

Jonathan Jennings School 109

Jonathan Jennings School 109 is on the far west side of Indianapolis, just north of 38th St and High School Rd. This K-6 elementary school received an A rating from the Indiana Department of Education. Students here focus on the core subjects but also participate in music, art, and physical education. A number of fun activities are spread throughout the year along with the opportunities to join the basketball or soccer teams.

 

Joyce Kilmer Academy 69

This K-6 elementary school is located near 34th St and Keystone Ave on the northeast side of Indianapolis.  Teachers give students hands-on opportunities to reinforce what is learned in the classroom and encourage parents to take an active role in their children’s education.  

 

Key Learning Community

The Key Learning Community offers K-12 education just south of downtown Indianapolis. Located near Kentucky Ave and McCarty St, this unique facility is part of the magnet program. This school focuses on the creatively gifted and talented students as well as molding their curriculum to reflect the multiple intelligences philosophy of education. 

 

Lew Wallace School 107

At Lew Wallace School 107, reading and literacy are the focal points for students, and the school has received several grants and partnerships for books and other literacy materials. This school houses pre-K through 6th grade students and is located near 34th St and High School Rd on the city’s northwest side. 

 

Louis B. Russell Jr School 48

The building that Louis B. Russell Jr School 48 is currently in originally was set up as an open-air concept school, but later renovations added walls, more classrooms, and other amenities necessary for a well-rounded education. With students ranging from pre-K through 6th grade, this school is located near 34th St and Central Ave.

 

Meredith Nicholson School 96

Near 38th St and Moller Rd on the city’s northwest side, Meredith Nicholson School 96 is a K-6 elementary school introduces a variety of fun activities and clubs in addition to focusing on the core subjects.  Teachers stress the importance of learning in a diverse world and teach students to be lifelong learners. ESL services are available to students whose first language is not English.

 

Nicholson Performing Arts Academy at School 70

This K-5 elementary school, located near 46th St and Central Ave about a mile east of Butler University, is a Performing and Visual Arts magnet school.  Teachers in this unique learning environment are trained to incorporate music, art, dance, and drama into the core subjects of reading, math, science, and social studies. Students can also join in a myriad of school activities to reinforce what they learned in the classroom.

 

Paul I. Miller School 114

Paul I. Miller School 114 is on Indianapolis’ southeast side, near Raymond St and Emerson Ave. Teachers at this school, housing students from pre-K through 6th grade, have high expectations for their students and hold them accountable for their actions. By focusing on communication skills, teachers help students become problem solvers and lifelong learners.

 

Ralph Waldo Emerson School 58

Ralph Waldo Emerson School 58 is a K-6 school located near Linwood Ave and New York St on the near east side. The school has been in its current building since 1908, although it has been renovated extensively to allow for modern upgrades and to add additional learning space. Instructors here focus on teaching relevant materials in a standards-based curriculum. 

 

Raymond F. Brandes School 65

Located on the city’s south side near Hanna Ave and Keystone Ave, this elementary school which includes pre-K through 6th grade is not far from the University of Indianapolis.  Teachers at Raymond F. Brandes School 65 integrate technology into their curriculum to give students a different medium to reinforce what they learn in the classroom. Plenty of fun activities are spread throughout the year to celebrate families as a vital part of the school community. 

 

Riverside School 44

Riverside School 44 is just north of 16th St and Indiana Ave on the northwest side of downtown Indianapolis. Tucked away in the historic Riverside neighborhood, the pre-K through 6th grade students here represent their school by taking part in neighborhood celebrations.  The school focuses on literacy and technology while guiding students to learn through doing.

 

Robert Lee Frost School 106

This K-6 elementary school on the northeast side of Indianapolis near 56th St and Arlington Ave focuses on early literacy skills through phonics recognition. Regular assessment of students’ skills help aid teachers and staff to pinpoint where individual focus needs to be. Students also have the opportunity to join in fun activities such as the basketball team.

 

Rosseau McClellan School 91

Located near 52nd St and Keystone Ave, Rosseau McClellan School 91 is an elementary school educating students from Kindergarten through the 8th grade. This school is part of the magnet program as one of the Montessori schools. The general philosophy of the Montessori program is to teach students through self-discovery in an inquisitive environment.

 

Sidener Academy for High Ability Students

The Sidener Academy for High Ability Students is located at Kessler Blvd E Dr and Keystone Ave in the Glendale neighborhood. This school is part of the magnet program and is available to students who are in Grades 2-8.  Teachers here challenge these students in different ways, beyond what the traditional classroom entails. Students benefit from advanced enrichment courses in a variety of subjects, such as orchestra, robotics, foreign languages, or karate.

 

Stephen Foster School 67

Pre-K through 6th grade students at Stephen Foster School 67 not only focus on strengthening their minds through reading but also in strengthening their bodies through making good eating choices and getting exercise.  Located on the west side near Michigan St and Holt Rd, teachers and staff at School 67 reward positive and respectful behavior with fun activities. 

 

SUPER School 19

Located on the city’s south side near State St and Raymond St, this unique school is part of the magnet program and includes students from Kindergarten through the 8th grade. SUPER stands for Students Understanding through Powerful and Energetic Routines. Teachers here focus on teaching students a standards-based curriculum but with the effort to keep kids moving. Research has shown the longer students at this age sit, the slower the brain functions, so getting kids active while in the classroom keeps them focused.

 

Theodore Potter School 74

Theodore Potter School 74 is IPS’s Spanish Immersion magnet school located near 10th St and Oriental Ave. The K-6 students at this A-rated school spend half of their day in English classes and the other half of their day studying math, science, and Spanish which are all taught in Spanish. By the time students leave the 6th grade, they should be fluent in reading, writing, and speaking Spanish as well as be on track with the other courses.

 

Thomas D. Gregg School 15

Located just east of Michigan St and Rural St on the near east side, School 15 has a unique theme of aviation and the aerospace industry. This school, which includes students from pre-K through 6th grade, received a grant from the Indiana Pacers toward STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) projects. Teachers and staff here also understand the importance of literacy and use technology to help students with different reading skill sets.

 

Washington Irving School 14

Nestled on the east side of downtown, Washington Irving School 14 teaches students from pre-K through the 6th grade.  Located near Market St and Oriental St, teachers here incorporate technology even in the youngest grades, watching students learn and grow as they discover new concepts. Students are rewarded with fun activities for doing well in school, giving their best effort, and being on their best behavior.

 

Wendell Phillips School 63

School 63 has a rich history dating back to the original school opening in 1911 in the Haughville neighborhood. This school, which houses pre-K through 6th grade, is located near White River Parkway W Dr and Belmont Ave is on the western edge of Mozel Sanders Park. It’s current building was built with additional classroom space to accommodate the growing population in the area as well as upgraded technology teachers can use in the classroom.

 

William McKinley School 39

William McKinley School 39 is located near State Ave and English Ave in the Fountain Square neighborhood. Opened in 1895, School 39 was originally a rural school, but as Indianapolis grow and expanded, so did School 39.  Students pre-K through 6th grade have opportunities to get additional academic help as needed, but they also have opportunities to participate in Student Council, Instrumental Music, Basketball or other activities.

 

William Penn School 49

This K-6 elementary school is located on the south side of downtown Indianapolis, near Morris St and Harding St. The school is on the eastern edge of Rhodius Park, part of the Indy Parks and Recreation Department.  Teachers and staff encourage students to always work toward excellence and offer students the guidance to achieve those goals.  Students also have the opportunities to join in several extracurricular activities such as archery club, soccer, basketball, environment club and more. 

 

Harshman Magnet Middle School

Harshman Middle School for Grades 7-8 is part of the magnet program as a magnet school for STEM courses (science, technology, engineering, math) and for World Languages. Located near 10th St and Oriental St on the near east side of downtown Indianapolis. Students get hands-on experience to reinforce what they learn in the classroom but also have the opportunities to join academic teams such as the robotics team. Students not only can continue with studying Spanish but can choose from other languages, such as German. Athletics such as basketball, soccer, softball, tennis, track, football, volleyball, and wrestling are also available throughout the year.

 

Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities

This is an academic center with a clear focus on offering a thorough education based around the arts and humanities. Located next to Broad Ripple Park in the northeastern section of Indianapolis, the school educates Grades 6-12 and offers numerous extracurricular activities, like band, orchestra, choir as well as dance and theatre programs. The school also focuses just as much on visual arts, where students can take comprehensive study into digital design, printmaking, art history, painting, photography and much more.  Students can also join athletic teams such as football, volleyball, cross country, golf, soccer, cheerleading, basketball, and others.

 

IPS Career Center

Located on the campus of Arsenal Tech High School near Michigan St and Oriental St, this center is open to students Grades 9-12.  This Career and Technical Education Center helps students focus on career paths and to introduce students to new career paths based on their interests. They offer early training in key vocations, presenting several options for post high school plans, whether it be college, vocational school, military service, or going directly into the workforce. Some businesses in the community mentor students, and some even offer scholarships to students who wish to pursue various vocations.

 

Crispus Attucks Medical Magnet High School

Crispus Attucks is part of the magnet program, serving students Grades 6-12.  This particular school focuses on educating students who are planning on careers in the medical industry. Particularly known for its basketball teams, Crispus Attucks also has a successful marching band program as well.

 

John Marshall Community High School

Located on the far east side on the corner of 38th St and Mitthoeffer Rd, John Marshall Community High School serves students in Grades 7-12.  This high school aims to create responsible global citizens who care about their education. Students at John Marshall are eager to give back to the community by mentoring elementary students and hosting the first school-based food pantry. Band and choir are popular choices at John Marshall, giving concerts throughout the school year. John Marshall students can also join baseball, cross country, football, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling teams.

 

Northwest Community High School

Also serving Grades 7-12, Northwest Community High School is located on the corner of 34th St and Moller Rd. Northwest Community High School has seen general increases in test scores and attendance in recent years and are working toward keeping this positive trend. First opening in 1963, Northwest is known as the Home of the Space Pioneers. Students can participate in football, basketball, cheerleading, and other sports as well as musical groups.

 

Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy

Shortridge High School is the magnet school where students Grades 6-12 who anticipate venturing into the law or public policy fields can get a jump start on their chosen career paths. Located on the corner of 34th St and Meridian St on the near north side of Indianapolis, students here learn in a diverse environment where they grasp the core principles of democracy, respect, and justice that they’ll be able to use after high school.  The school first opened in 1864 and boasts several high profile alumni. Sports teams include cross country, volleyball, soccer, cheerleading, basketball, track, golf, football, and wrestling. 

 

Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School

Located near 38th St and Moller Rd on the northwest side, Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School houses students who are in Grades 9-12.  Students here work through the rigorous curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Programme. It covers a broader spectrum of core subjects and focuses on cultural diversity.  Gambold students can also enjoy participating in cross country, volleyball, golf, tennis, soccer, basketball, cheerleading, track and field as well as clubs in crew, ultimate Frisbee, and hurling and Gaelic football.

 

George Washington Community High School

This  high school covering Grades 7-12 located near West Washington St and Belmont Ave opened in 1927.  George Washington Community High School has won numerous national awards regarding their significant increase in graduation rates and the number of students who continue onto post-secondary education. Washington students not only excel in the classroom, but they’ve also won many titles and conferences in basketball, golf, and track.

 

Arsenal Technical High School

Just east of downtown Indianapolis near the Mass Ave Cultural District, Arsenal Technical High School has a beautiful campus, educating students from Grades 9-12. The campus was originally a US Civil War Arsenal but closed during the Spanish-American War. With a comprehensive educational program utilizing the latest technology and best teachers, Arsenal Technical High School provides its students with a powerful, useful education. Having one of the most extensive athletic programs, students can choose teams in many different sports including baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, rugby, soccer, softball, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. Arsenal Tech, as it’s locally known, is particularly known for its music department, which offers many choral and instrumental groups to join.
